Barrel Weight to Stiffness Calculator
Standard vs. Structured
At TACOM HQ, people often ask, “How much better is this diameter for a Structured Barrel?” To answer this question with accuracy, we built an equation to power this form to simultaneously calculate the weight and stiffness of both a standard and Structured Barrel. All input-values are in inches with net weights in pounds (lbs). Calculations exclude gunsmithing, dimpling, and the fallen angel finish for baseline comparison and serve as an estimate for results may vary.
Guide
1. Click here to launch the Structured Barrel order form.
2. Select from the drop-down menus and record the “Max Finish Diameter”, “Caliber”, and “Length” fields.
3. Input into the Barrel Weight Calculator for an estimate.
Since stiffness is powered by a biquadrate (to the fourth power), changes in diameter and internal geometries rapidly affect stiffness. This calculator reveals the following relationships, so end users are recommended to select a larger diameter for greater stiffness and heat dissipation:
1. A Structured Barrel will be less stiff than a standard barrel of the same diameter.
2. A Structured Barrel will be stiffer than a standard barrel of the same weight.
3. A Structured Barrel will be approximately 35% stiffer than a standard barrel with a marginal weight gain.
